Fearing there will be a civil war, King Victor Emmanuel III asked Mussolini to form a government as prime minister. He entered the city triumphantly on October 30, 1922, thus obtained a nominally legal, constituional appointment from the king to lead Italy.

Early Years:Born in a small village named Predappio in the province of Forlì. His father was a blacksmith and his mother was a teacher. By the age of eigh he was banned from his mother's church and expelled from school for stabbing a fellow student and throwing an ink pot at a teacher. However, he did receive good grades, and he qualified as an elementry school-master in 1901.

In 1902, Mussolini immigrated to Switzerland. Unable to find a permanent job and arrested for vagrancy, he was expelled and sent back to Italy to do his military work. After more trouble with the police he joined the staff of a newspaper in the Austrian town of Trento. in 1908, he wrote a novel, "The Cardinal's Mistress."

Political Beliefs:Mussolini was a socialist in is youth, but during the war he rejected it for intense nationalism. He came up with an idea called fascism. Mussolini set up a National Fascist Party. Before long they gained control of the government through decisive action, including stopping a strike called by the majority party.

Mussolini used Black Shirts for his paramilitary. The founders of the paramilitary groups were nationalist intellectuals, former army officers or members of the special corp Arditi, young landowners opposing peasants' and country labourers' unions.
