MAP OF BENIN
At about 2 pm on February 18, 1897, Benin City, capital of the independent Benin Kingdom, fell to Troops commanded by British officers. On the 19th and 20th, houses of major Chiefs were burnt after being looted. On the 21st, the entire city was consumed in fire started by British soldiers. A series of events in the last 50 years of the 19th century increased the vulnerability of the Kingdom.
