Crash Course: Reconstruction and 1876

Pinckney B.S. Pinchback

Pinckeny B.S. Pinchback was the first African American governer in the United States. There was not another African American elected until 1989. He never held another political office after his election in 1872. He did work on the Louisiana State Board of Education and was esential in establishing Southern Universities, making higher education to African Americans.

Sharecropping was the system of farming where a tenant works a piece of land in exchange for part of the profit of the crop they grow. Sharecropping was a very hard system to get out of once you were in it. Because you only made part of the profit from what you grew, you could almost never have enough money to leave and make a real living for your family.
