Battle of Peleliu
The Battle of Peleliu started on September 15th, 1944. Just after landing, U.S. troops capture a crucial airfield under heavy artillery fire. Over the next eight days, U.S. troops sustained about 50 percent casualties in some of the most vicious and costly fighting of the Pacific campaign. The U.S. planned to take the island nation in four days. But the battle lasted over two months. It finally ended on November 27th, 1944.

Even today, Peleliu remains one of the most controversial battles of World War II. Visitors to the Pacific island of Peleliu can't claim they weren't warned. The sign at the harbour says "Welcome to Peleliu -- Land of Enchantment," but as the boat approaches the quay, a second sign becomes visible. "Remember that WWII ordnance is still dangerous and can injure or kill!"
