Mean, median, mode, range...All these words? Well, they arethe basics of statistics! Let's break them down a bit to betterunderstand them!
Plankton?Soooo basic!
A fisherman counted the different types of fish he saw as he was fishing. Here are the totals he had at the end of the day. 8 10 11 12 1414 14 15 17 25
EXAMPLE!
USING THE CALCULATOR!Step1) Hit [STAT] and select "Edit"Step2) Type your data in the L1 column.Step3) Hit [STAT], hit the right arrow to the "Calc" tab, and select "1-Var Stats". Hit [Enter] and this will give you all your stats!
SYMBOLS
Mean = If you add up the numbers (140) and divide by how many numbers there were (10), you get 140 / 10 = 14
Mode = Since "14" appears three times, it is the most frequent, and therefore the mode is 14
Median = Start by counting from the beginning and end of the numbers. Go until you are in the middle, which would be "14" and "14". This means the median is 14
Range = Take the largest number (25) and subtract the smallest (8). 25 - 8 = 17. Done!
