What it is and who colaborates with it
Amnesty International is a global movement in over 150 countries working for human rights recognized in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted in 1948 and other international treaties such as the International Covenants on Human Rights, to be recognized and respected. Amnesty has over 3 million members and supporters worldwide. The aim of the organization is "to undertake research and take action to prevent and end grave abused of civil, political, social, cultural and economic rights" and demand justice for those whose rights have been violated.
How and when it was created
General ideas and examples
Amnesty International was founded in 1961when Peter Benenson, a British lawyer,published in The Observer an article entitled "The Forgotten Prisoners" protesting ofthe treatment of Portuguese political activists. The article was reprinted in newspapersaround the world and served as a catalystfor the creation of a "campaign for Amnesty1961".
