When the symptoms of Autism are recognized in a person, a doctor will perform an evaluation that includes the patients medical history, a physical exam, and a neurological exam. Because their is no present laboratory tests to confirm Autism, the doctor will use other tests to determine physical, genetic, or metabolic disorders that may be causing the symptoms. In the presence that no physical disorder is found, the patient may be reffered to a specialist that deals with childhood developmental disorders who will perform a multitude of tests to determine if the patient falls onto the spectrum and where.

Treatments Include:*Special Education - an appropriate education structure to meet the child's needs*Behavior Modification- straegies are used to teach positive behaviors*Speech, Physical, or Occupational Therapy - designed to increase child's functional abilities*Social Skills Therapies - used to teach an understanding of communication skills*Medication - Their are no current meds to treat Autism, but some medications can be used to treat the underlying symptoms.
