Autism Awareness pt. 2

Autism Awareness

Part 3

Part 1

Early Intervention: There is no cure for ASD, though with early intervention and treatment, the diverse symptoms related to autism can be improved. Most experts agree that the earlier the diagnosis and intervention, the better. Highly structured and organized programs tailored to specific needs provide the best outcomes.

Autism Awareness Day: "April 2nd is the World Autism Awareness Day - a day to increase and develop world knowledge of autism, by bringing together autism organizations from around the world. The aim is to give a voice to the millions of individuals worldwide who are undiagnosed, misunderstood and looking for help."

Autism Awareness Month: The Autism Society has been celebrating National Autism Awareness Months since the 1970's. The Autism Awareness Puzzle Ribbon (center) is the most recognized symbol of the autism community. They are available as pins, magnets, ribbons, blog badges, and facebook profile pictures.

Treatment (cont.): Facilitated Communication, Lovaas Method (or similar behavioristic methods), Audio Integration Therapy, and dietary changes to see if anything is fueling the autistic behavior are all examples of controversial therapies. Most, if not all, of these methods are not supported by any scientific study.

Treatment: Some medications can help with specific ASD-related symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, or OCD. Other medications can be used to treat severe behavioral problems, seizures, ADD/ADHD, or other specific symptoms. There are also controversial therapies for people with ASD.
