Australian Federation

Henry Parkes is known as the 'Father of Federation'. He was the premier for New South Wales and was a huge supporter of federation and in October 1889 he made a speech for the other colonies to 'unite and create a great national government for all Australia'. Unfortunately Henry passed away in 1896 before Australia became a federation......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Before 1901, there were six self-regulating colonies which made up the Australian continent. The colonies were: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia. Many people were initially against the idea of federation, but several of the colony politians campaigned for years and years. In 1898 the first referendum (vote) was held so the people of Australia could vote whether they were for or against becoming a federation. The Queensland and Western Australia colonies did not wish to take part in the vote, and federation did not get approved within the New South Wales colony. A second referendum was held in 1899, and on this occasion the referendum was successful. On January 1st 1901, The Commonwealth of Australia was proclaimed and the colonies became states.

Without federation Australia would not have its own federal parliament system. We also wouldn't have the unity amongst the other states that we have today.

Why is federation so important?
