Australia was first inhabited between 42,000 and 46,000 years ago. After their loss of the American colonies, the British government began colonizing Australia with the formation of New South Whales in 1788. This led to the foundation of Sydney. On January 1st 1901, the six colonies in Australia united and established the Commonwealth of Australia as a dominion of the British Empire. Constitutional ties between the UK and Australia weren't completely severed till the Australia Act of 1986 was passed.
