Australia is an Oceanian country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands. It is the world's sixth-largest country by total area.

It consists of a huge variety of animals; some 83% of mammals, 89% of reptiles, 24% of fish and insects and 93% of amphibians that inhabit the continent are endemic to Australia. Some of the best known animals of Australia are kangaroos, koalas, platypus, wombats, emus and dingos.

EnvironmentMost of Australia is semi-arid or desert, but it includes a diverse range of habitats from alpine heaths to tropical rainforests, and is recognised as a megadiverse country.
