Australia's Early Days
Van Diemen’s land is made a separate colony and George Arthur is the Lieutenant Governor. It is used as a very horrible penal settlement.
Two Catholic priests from Ireland arrive in NSW. It’s the first time since 1804 that the Catholic mass has been allowed in public.
There is lots of conflict between Indigenous people and the new settlers in Van Diemen’s land. Lieutenant – Governor Arthur bans all Aboriginal people from all towns and soldiers kept them out.
Only a quarter of the children in the colonies got to go to primary school, now 2 million kids go to the primary school.
The Convicts could no longer earn money or receive free land grants when they finished their sentences.
History
After his return from investigating what things were like and the way they did it in the colonies Mr Bigges wrote a report. The British Government decided to make some recommendations.
