Niels Bohr (1885-1962), a Danish physicist and pioneer researcher into atomic structure. Working with Ernest Rutherford at Cambridge University, he found that the atom consisted of a positively-charged nucleus surrounded by negative "planetary" electrons. In 1913 Bohr postulated that electrons move around the nucleus of the atom in restricted orbits. In 1943 Bohr was forced to flee from his homeland because of the Nazi occupation. He is pictured here in 1948, arriving to join the faculty of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. During World War II he assisted in the atomic bomb research in the U.S.
