Mars' atmosphere is over 100 times less dense than Earth's and predominantly consists of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and argon. This atmosphere is too thin for water to be on the surface in its liquid form. Liquid water can’t exist for long on the exterior of the planet, so evidence of water existence on Mars comes from narrow clouds, icy soil, and indications of previous floods. Weather, seasons, canyons, volcanoes, and polar ice caps all exist on Mars. Earth and Mars have similar tilts, Earth having a 23.5 degree and Mars having a 25 degree tilt. The tilt of the planets results in seasons. On Mars, some seasons are longer than others because of Mars' elliptical orbit. The seasons on Mars are also a lot longer than Earth's seasons. Mars' year is 687 days, almost twice as long as a year on Earth. Since Mars is farther from the sun, it takes a greater amount of time to complete one orbit.This cold desert has an average atmospheric temperature of -63 degrees Celsius (-81 degrees Fahrenheit). The temperature of Mars' surface ranges from -140 to 30 degrees C (-284 to 86 degrees F).

• Mars is considered a terrestrial planet, due to its rocky surface. • The terrain is dry, dusty, and scattered with rocks. • Dust storms, crustral movement, volcanoes and impacts have all changed the face of the planet. • Iron minerals on Mars oxidize/rust, causing the planet to appear red, giving Mars the nickname the "Red Planet". • The surface area of Mars is 55,742,106 square miles. • Mars and Earth have the same dry land area.

The gravity on Mars is approximately 37.5% of Earth's gravity. The gravitational acceleration is 3.71 meters per second squared. Therefore, a 100 pound individual would weigh about 38 pounds on Mars. Mars is less massive that Earth, giving it a weaker gravitational pull. Mars is located about 142 million miles from the sun and is the fourth planet from it. As to the distance between Earth and Mars, it isn't constant. The distance constantly changes depending on the orbit factors of the two planets. The average distance, however, is 140 million miles apart.
