Seven Reading Comprehension Strategies
Assistive Technology for SPED Students when Teaching Reading
In order to become proficient readers children must be taught skills in these (5) specific topics1) Phonemic Awareness: ability to focus on and manipulate phonemes in spoken words.2) Phonics: is the instruction where the teacher teaches the correspondence between sounds and letters.3) Fluency: the ability to read orally with, speed, accuracy, and proper expression.4) Comprehension: the ability to understand what is read.5) Vocabulary: The body of words used in a particular language.
The primary focus of schools is on reading instruction, on children its learning to read, whereas in grades 4 and up the focus switches to children reading to learn. Skills involved in reading to learn are called content literacy skills, which are defined as the ability to use reading and writing to acquire new content.

1) Summarizing: students are asked to summarize that they read.2) Questioning: posing questions about content.3) Clarifying: asking period on what they do not understand.4) Predicting: using what is known to predict outcomes.5) Visualizing: students visualize settings or important events.6) Feeling: making personal connections to the text or put themselves in characters place.7) Reflecting: reflecting on personal progess as reader.
