Dr. Leo Kanner
Working unaware of each other and on opposite sides of the Atlantic in the 1940's both of these Austrian physicians coined the term autistic [psychopathy]. Dr. Kanner researched behavior in children believed to be in the low function Autism Spectrum while Dr. Asperger's research was in the high functioning end of the Autism Spectrum. (The concepts of low and high functioning Autism, as well as Autism Spectrum had yet to be concieved in the 1940's.)
Asperger's is 1 of 5 Neurobiological Pervasive Developmental Disorders or PDD's; they are Autism, Rett Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD) and Asperger's Syndrome (AS).
