Served as a doctor in the navy before he went on to work as a research scientist in Maryland.

DNA Polymerases

- Discovered certain enzymes that create DNA molecules by assembling nucleotides.- These enzymes, DNA polymerases, produce new DNA strands to create two new strands that match the prexisting one.

Shared Nobel Prize in Medicine with Severo Ochoain 1959, "for their discovery of the mechanisms in the biological synthesis of ribonucleic acid and deoxyribonucleic acid"

In 1957, he attempted to publish his research in a series of journals. After being declined twice, he finally had them published in 1958. A year later, he was awarded the nobel prize.
