Five New Vocabulary Words:1. Evaporite2. Monoliths3. Spires4. Sandstone Fins5. Desert Cottontails

Humans first left sign in Arches about 10,000 years ago. Ancient hunter-gatherers used local rocks such as chert to make hunting tools.

Arches National Park is located in Grand County, Utah and the nearest city is in Moab, Utah. Arches National Park is 350 miles from The Grand Canyon. Arches was deemed a National Park on November 12th, 1971, and known as a National Monument on April 12th, 1929.

Arches National Park lies right on top of an underground evaporite layer or salt bed, which is the main cause of the formation of the arches, spires, balanced rocks, sandstone fins, and eroded monoliths in the area.

Naturally-occurring small depressions in sandstone called “potholes” collect water, which is a vital resource for animals in this extremely dry climate.

A natural arch is only considered to be one if it has an opening at least three feet wide.

Their Definitions:1. a natural salt or mineral deposit left after the evaporation of a body of water.2.a large single upright block of stone, especially one shaped into or serving as a pillar or monument.3. a tapering conical or pyramidal structure on the top of a building, typically a church tower.4. Narrow Sandstone walls5. is a New World cottontail rabbit; a member of the family Leporidae.

Almost 50 species of mammal are known to live in Arches. Some, like desert cottontails, kangaroo rats and mule deer, are common and may be seen by a majority of visitors. However, many desert animals are inactive during daylight hours or are wary of humans, so sightings can be truly special events.

Cryptobiotic crust, a living soil comprised of algae, lichens, and bacteria, is found all over Arches. Very fragile, it is also very important because it holds together the dry desert soil. The saying goes, “Tiptoe through the crypto.” Avoid treading on it if you can.
