Hypothesis & Null Hypothesis

My hypothesis stated that the number of seeds in Granny Smith apples are significantly greater than the number of seeds in Gala apples. My null hypothesis stated that there is no significant difference between the amount of seeds in Granny Smith apples and the amount of seeds in Gala apples. After doing the procedure and according to my data, I found that my hypothesis was correct. There are a number of factors that could effect the amount of seeds in an apple. The variety, the growing season, the health of the apple, as well as the size of the apple all have an effect on the amount of seeds it contains. With the apples that I purchased, the Granny Smith apples had one or more of these significant factors affecting them, as all 3 apples had the most seeds. In order to look further into this study, I would need to add multiple varieties of apples and collect seeds from 5 or more of each variety. If I were to get apples from the same area and under all of the same growing conditions, that would also improve this study.

1. Gather materials. Label the small cups with the marker as Gala #1, #2, and #3 and Granny Smith #1, #2, #3. 2. Cut Gala #1 in half and remove what seeds you can see. Cut the halves in half, remove the rest of the seeds and place all of them in the cup labeled Gala #1. 3. Repeat step 2 for the remaining apples until you have removed all of the seeds from the apples.4. One cup at a time, count the amount of seeds in each cup and write the number in the data table.

Data Results

- 3 Granny Smith Apples- 3 Gala Apples- Cutting Board- Knife- 6 Small Cups- Marker

Hypothesis: The number of seeds in Granny Smith apples are significantly greater than the number of seeds in Gala apples. Null Hypothesis: There is no significant difference between the amount of seeds in Granny Smith apples and the amount of seeds in Gala apples.

Procedure

Safety Precautions

- Do not cut the apples in your hand. Use the cutting board and cut away from your body!- If you are doing this study with children, they must always have adult supervision when using knives. The adults should cut the apples for children who do not know how to use knives properly.

Conclusion

Observations: I noticed that there are 5 sections that the seeds are in. There were missing seeds in many of the Gala apples and there were extra seeds in the Granny Smith apples. The size of the seeds in the different varieties of seeds are different as well. The Granny Smith seeds are bigger, rounder, and look like they are opening up.
