Apollo 11

Apollo 11 was the first manned mission who's goal was to perform a crewed lunar landing and return safely to earth. This was manned by three people, The Commander, Neil A. Armstrong, The Command Module Pilot, Michael Collins, and The Lunar Module Pilot, Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin Jr.. These men were monitored by a whole room of people. These people watched

The Desent to the Moon

- July 16th, 1969 the Apollo 11 space craft took off at Kennedy Space Center at 9:32 a.m. EDT - 12 minutes later the crew is in earth's orbit - Armstrong and Aldrin preformed a manuever to seperte the LM from the CM at 1:11 pm - Later they begin the 12 min. desent - They touched down on the moon at 4:18 p.m. EDT - Armstrong and Aldrin spent 2 hrs. and 32 min. on the moon's surface - At 12:56 p.m., July 22, the spacecraft starts its trans-earth injection - On July 24, 1969 at 12:51 p.m. EDT Columbia splashes into the Pacific Ocean

During the desent to the moon's surface an alarm went off. They asked the engineers back on earth what was wrong, they said it was fine and to keep going, and that it was just an overworked computer. This happened a second time ,but they just kept going. Now they faced a new problem, the programmed spot to land was covered in craters and rocks, so Armstrong took the controls, even though it wasn't his job. He guided Eagle to a safe landing spot. They landed with 30 seconds of fuel left. Neil said, " Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." Then the three men sat down for a meal of bacon squares, sugar cookies, peaches, juice, and coffee. After Armstrong, Collins, and Aldrin had time to rest and eat, it came time to complete the task at hand. The Moonwalk. Neil and Buzz put on their gear as they have practiced on earth, and climbed through the small hatch, down the ladder and they were on the moon. Armstrong and Aldrin collected 47.8 lbs. of lunar samples

About The Rocket

The rocket launched was a standard Saturn V rocketColumbia ( Command Module) 10.6 ft. tall12.8 ft. in widthAnd 12,251 lbs.Eagle ( Lunar Module)22.9 ft. tall31 ft. in widthand 32,000 lbs. There is a difference between a command module and lunar module. While the lunar module lands on the moon, the command module orbits the moon while doing experiments.

A trans-earth injection is a propulsion (the action of driving or pushing forward) manuever used to set a spacecraft on a trajectory (path that a moving object through space) which will intersect with Earth Lunar Module or LM is a small craft used for traveling between the moon's surface and an orbiting spacecraft. In the Apollo 11 mission the LM was called EagleCommand Module or CM is the detachable control portion of a manned spacecraft. In the Apollo 11 mission this was called Columbia EDT is Eastern Daylight Time

Fun Facts

Apollo 11 Mission

- On Earth Neil would weigh a wopping 380 lbs. with all of his gear on. While on the moon, he only weighed 60 lbs.because the gravity is only 1/6 of earth's gravity. - During the time of the Apollo 11 mission our country was actually at war with the Soviet Union, this was called the Cold War. This was not only fighting with nuclear missles or other weapons, but we were having a SPACE RACE. - One of the astronauts kicked loose a circuit breaker, which was used to ignite the engine for their trip home. This was repaired with a felt tip pen. - When the Apollo 11 left the moon the debris and dust knocked over the American flag.
