Ansel Adams was born on February 20, 1902 in Monterey California. At age 12 Ansel practiced the piano, and his teacher focused on substance, discipline, and structure. Later when he chose photography over music, these qualities later contributed to his artwork. When Ansel was 14 years old, he and his family visited Yosemite National Park. His father gave him his first camera on this trip, a Kodak Brownie Box. The next year he went back with a better camera and tripod. He learned dark room techniques when working for a photo finisher in San Francisco. Ansel avidly read photography magazines and attended art exhibits. When he was just 16 he married Virginia Best from Best's Studios. Taking the company over until the year 1971. Ansel and Virginia both had two kids together. Ansel died from a leg surgery to remove a tumor in 1984. He recieved fine arts degrees from both Harvard and Yale University. Today there are awards named after him, and an archive of his work is held at the University of Arizona.
