Ronald Reagan at the Berlin Wall, June 1987: "Tear down this wall!"

The Berlin Wall was constructed on August 13, 1961, it's purpose was to cut off West Berlin from East Berlin. There were large guard towers along the East side. The East side was under control of the Soviet Union and the West side was under the control of the United States. It affected the Cold War in many ways because of the tension it caused between USSR and USA over Berlin. On June 12, 1987 Ronald Regan told General Secretary of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the wall. The wall was finally torn completely down on October 3 1990.
