Stereotyping Awareness

A stereotype is defined as a social perception of an individual in terms of group membership or physical attributes. It is a generalization that is made about a group and then attributed to members of that group. Generalization could be negative or positive. Stereotyping is a form of social categorization that affects the behaviour of those who hold the stereotype, and those who are labelled by a stereotype

According to Steele and Aronson (1995)- After their experiment in which they gave a 30-minute verbal test, made up by very hard multiple choice questions. The results were:When one group was told it was genuine test of their verbal activities- African American scored lower than European American participantsIn another group,Same test presented as a laboratory task used to study how certain problems are generally solved- African American scored higher than the other group before and matched the European American performance and result. Conclusion: Stereotype threat can affect the members of just about any social or cultural group, if the members believed in the stereotypeArguemnts to why some social groups find themselves more or less intelegent- this can harm these groups performance
