Ancient West African Empires

Ghana is a ancient West African Empire that began around in the 4th and 5th century C.E and ended in 1100 C.E. Ghana's empire had many geographical areas such as the Sahara Desert oasis and was lush in vegetation. The empire of Ghana also had many rulers in its life span. Some of its rulers such as Maja, Wagadou and Bannu Buba were memorable. There were some well known in cities in Ghana suh as Taghaza, Koumbi Saleh (the capital city), and Aghast. Ghana even had many sources of wealth to make this empire thrive such as gold, iron and a salt mines. An economic acheviment of ancient Ghana was its ability to trade its natural resources such as gold in exchange for salt, clothing and manufactured goods.

Songhai is another important West Aafrican empire. Songhai began around the 4th or 5th century C.E and ended in 1591 C.E. Songhai lies near the Niger River,rainforest, and south of the Saharah Dessert. Songhai empire was ruled by Askia Muhammad, Bakori Da’a, and Sunni Ali. Some of their major cities at that time were Gao (capital city), Timbuktu and Djenne. SonghI gained its money and wealth from gold,slave trade, and ivory. Songhai became a thriving cultural center. Merchants gathered there for trade. A cultural achievment of the Songhai was their ability to strenghten relations with the rest of the muslim world. They encouraged immigration of skilled workers and scholars from places like Arabia, Morocco and Egypt. Thee was a blend of West African beliefs and Islam. Daily life was ruled by traditions and localcustoms but the law of the land was based on Islam.

Mali is another aniceint West African Empire that began in the 4th or 5th century C.E and ended in C.E. The region of Mail lies near the Sahara Desert , grasslands and coastal rainforest. Mali was ruled by many fasinating people such as Sundiata Keita, Mansa Musa and Mahmud IV. Some of Mali's major cities are Goa, Niani, Mecca. Mali earned its wealth from slaves, salt mines, caravan trade and gold. This great empire had a well run political system. A political achievement during that time was their ability to centralize the plolitical and military powers. A strong army was built as it was the empires's responsibility to protect the trade routes. The rulers were generous to the citizens and offered religious freedom. The rulers were loved.
