George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, to Augustine and Janet Washington. He was born in Pope’s Creek in Westmoreland County, Virginia. George Washington began school at the age of six, but only had six years of schooling. When he was sixteen years old, in 1749, he was appointed a land surveyor for Culpeper County in Virginia. Upon the death of his brother, he inherited his beloved childhood home of Mount Vernon. He also took over his brother’s post in the Virginia militia. In 1753, George was given the rank of major during the French and Indian War. In 1759, he married a very wealthy widow named Martha Dandridge Custis. In the middle of the American Revolutionary War, George Washington was elected to the First Continental Congress. He was one of the founding fathers of our Nation, and signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. George Washington was unanimously elected President of the United States, in 1789 and 1793. On December 14, 1799, George Washington died at the age of 67.
Accomplishments
Among his many accomplishment, George Washington was the first and only President to be unanimously elected twice.He was the youngest land surveyor on record at age 16.He led the American colonies to victory in the French and Indian War as well as the American Revolutionary War.
