Richard Henry Lee had called for a resolution that had said' That these united colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states.

Under the Articles, each state elected representatives to serve in a national legislature. It was called the Confederation Congress.

In Common Sense, Pain argued that the colonies should claim their independence.

While trying to keep the British from taking Philadelphia, the Continental Army lost a battle at Brandywine, Pennsylvannia.
