American Revolution For African Americans

How revolutionary was the American Revolution for African Americans? The American revolution was extremely revolutionary for African Americans! (It just takes awhile to be).

The AmericanRevolutionforAfricanAmericans

Slaves working in a cotten field

Before the war there were very few free African Americans who had little right. There were also slaves who were considered to be property and treated as the owner pleased with no rights.

African Americans initially weren't able to join in the war efforts but recruiters needed to fill a quota. So African Americans, after an amount of time, were able to join either the army or the navy. They made up much of the army because they were guaranteed freedom if a slave joined.

Initial Effects

Participation in War

In the Declaration of Independence it states that all men are deserving of the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Dr. King dreamed would become a reality and would later come after his assassination in 1968 where all men are given the same rights. This would not of happened without the American Revolution creating that mindset.

Long TermEffects

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his famous," I have a Dream Speech"

After the war for independence some African Americans achieved freedom and, through the use of churches, the African-Americans came to the understanding that they were to ones who best upheld the "revolutionary tradition" of social justice, equality, and most of all, freedom.
