Alzheimers Disease

Alzheimers Disease

By: Daniel Grudzinski

It is a Progressive Mental deterioration that can occur in middle or old age, due to generalized degeneration fo the brain. It is also the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases.

What is Alzheimers?

The gene that Causes it

Symptoms

Most cases of early-onset Alzheimer disease are caused by gene mutations that can be passed from parent to child. Researchers have found that this form of the disorder can be result from mutations in one of three genes: APP, PSEN1, or PSEN2

Chances Of Getting It

Treatments

The Chromosome that is affected by this disease is Chromosome 19

Alzheimers has no current cure. But treatments for symptoms are available and research continues. Treatments cannot stop Alzheimers from progressing, but they can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms and improve quality of life those with it. There are two types of medications used to help treat alzheimers symptoms — cholinesterase inhibitors (Aricept, Exelon, Razadyne, Cognex) and memantine (Namenda) — they treat the cognitive symptoms (memory loss, confusion, and problems with thinking and reasoning) of Alzheimer's disease.

If you are 65 your chances of developing the disease doubles every five years after that. If you are 80 or older your chances are 50-50Alzheimers is not a normal part of aging althogh the greatest known risk factor is increaing age, and the majority of people with Alzheimers are 65 and older. But Alzheimers is not just a disease of old age. Up to 4 percent of people with the disease have early onset alzheimer's, which often appears when someone is in their 40's or 50's

How do you getAlzheimers?

Scientists dont yet fully understand what causes Alzheimers disease, but it has become increasily clear that it develops because of a complex series of events that take place in the brain over a long period of time. Scientists know genes are involved in Alzheimers. There are two types of genes that can play a role in affecting whether a person develops the disease- risk genes and deterministic genes. Alzheimers genes have been found in both categories.
