In 1983 NASA's Lewis Rsearch Center (now NASA Glen) set up a solar powered system on the Indian Reservation Schuchuli, Ariz. The system pumped water through the villege and provided electricity to 15 homes. Engineers hooked up the homes to a grid and a community water well would would use the system's energy to pump water through the community.

First diesel engine to run on vegetable oil

The first time vegetable oil was used as a fuel was at the 1900 World's Fair. The French governemnt wanted the Otto company to build a diesel engine to run on peanut oil. Rudolph Diesel did tons of research to see if they could also use vegetable oil as a fuel. He did this so farmers could provide their own fuel.

The world's largest hydroelectric power plant

The Hoover dam was completed between 1931-1935. It runs along the Colorado River in Arizona. The Hoover Dam remains the largest producer of hydroelectricty in the world until 1948.

$3.4 Billion to modernize energy grid

On October 27, 2009 President Barack Obama announced that he will be funding the largest single engergy grid modernization investment in U.S. history. Costing $3.4 billion he says this will be more stronger, smarter, more efficient and reliable than any electric system.
