They enlist for war innocently, but soon into the fighting the group realizes that war is not as glorious as it seems. Later on the group visits a suffering friend named Kemmerich. Kemmerich soon dies with Paul at his bedside, thus traumatizing the group. More war continues, with gruesome battles and death. The war and death further traumatizes Paul and changes him for life, only to learn his mother has cancer on a visit to his family. Paul continues to fight the battle and his traumatizing experiences. More of Paul's friends die all to end with his own death. He died with happiness. The pain is over.

How does the plot relate to the theme?

The theme is innocence and growing up. It shows that keeping your innocence is an important trait.

"Iron Youth. Youth! We are none of us more than twenty years old. But young? Youth? That is long ago. We are old folk (Remarque, Chapter 1).""I don't know whether it's morning or evening. I lie in the pale cradle of the twilight, and listen for the soft words which will come, soft and near – am I crying? I put my hand to my eyes, it is so fantastic; am I a child (Remarque, Chapter 4) ?""We are forlorn like children, and experienced like old men, we are crude and sorrowful and superficial – I believe we are lost (Remarque, Chapter 6)."
