All About Rocks

Metamorphic Rocks are rocks that are altered by extreme pressure and heat. This extreme pressure and heat causes physical and/or chemical change to the rock. Metamorphic rocks make up a large part of the earth's crust. There are 3 main ways metamorphic rocks are formed.

Metamorphic Rocks

Igneous Rocks are called "Fire Rocks." This is because igneous rocks are formed from the cooling and solidifcation of magna, or lava. Igneous Rocks make up 90-95% of the top 10 miles of the Earth's crust. Igneous rock may form with or without crystallization. There are two types of igneous rock, Intrusive and Extrusive.

Igneous Rocks

Sedimentary Rocks are formed by the layering of material near the Earth's surface. The sediment is compressed over a long period of time before becoming solid rock. Sedimentary rock covers vast amounts of the Earth's surface but is estimated to be only about 8% of the Earth's crust.

Study of sedimentary rock is the main source for knowledge about the Earth's history. This is because you can see the different time periods in the layers of the sedimentary rock. The study of sedimentary rock is called Sedimentology.

Gneiss, Slate, Marble, Schist, and Quartzite and the most common types of metamorphic rock.



Limestone, Sandstone, Mudstone, Greywacke, Chalk, Coal, Claystone and Flint are common types of Sedimentary Rock.

Notch Peak in Utah is composed of Limestone. Lower Antelope Canyon in Arizona is composed of Sandstone. Can you see the different layers?

Intrusive These rocks are formed from magma that cools and solidifies within the crust of a planet.They are coarse grained.Extrusive These rocks are formed at the Earth's surface as a result of rapid cooling of magna. They are fine grained.

Intrusive rocks include diorite, gabbro, granite and pegmatite. Extrusive rocks include andesite, basalt, obsidian, pumice, rhyolite and scoria
