All About Carbon

Discovering and NamingCarbon was officially classified as an element near the end of the 18th century, but it has been around for a really long time, because whenever someone saw smoke, they were seeing bits of unburned carbon. Carbon’s name was derived from the latin term for charcoal, charbon, and in the 18th century it was named carbone, but over time it got shortened to carbon.

Chemical Properties-Carbon does not dissolve in or react with water, acids, or most other materials. -Carbon atoms can form virtually endless chains, which is unusual and unique of carbon. There is no limit to size or shape of these chains.-When Carbon reacts with Oxygen to burn, it produces Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Carbon monoxide (CO). Carbon monoxide can be toxic and harmful to humans and animals at high concentrations.

Physical PropertiesPure Carbon occurs in a few forms, including graphite, diamond and the rare buckyball (C60) molecule. Carbon has more compounds than any other element, which is more than 10 million compounds. Lampblack, Charcoal, and Carbon Black (similar to soot) are just a few of the compounds, which come in a large variety of different forms. What is it used for?Carbon is used for many things, such as:-ink-pencils-rubber tires-fire extinguishers-moderating nuclear power plants-eyeliner-radioactive isotope carbon-14: to find how old or how thick a object is-diamonds and factory diamond tools: in jewelry, to polish or grind, to cut glass and metals, etc.-printing-respirators-water purification and treatment-batteries-etc.

Where is it found?Carbon is critical to all life, is the fifth most common element in the universe, and the second most common in the human body after oxygen. Plants, animals, foods, air, soil, trees all contain Carbon, as part of the carbon cycle (see video below). As I stated in the physical properties section (more info there), it is found in diamonds, graphite, coal, and many other substances. It also has over a million compounds (also stated in the Physical Properties section).
