Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta was born February 18, 1749 in Como, Lombardy Italy. His parents wanted him to become a jurist, but he chose science instead. He first became a professor in physics at the Royal school in Como in 1774. Volta devised the electrophorus (a device that produces charges of static electricity) in 1775. In 1779 Volta became the professor of physics at the University of Pavia. In 1794 he married Teresa Peregrini. Volta retired in 1819 from all of his work. He later died on March 5, 1827 in Como.

Voltaic Pile

Volta and Galvini Create the Battery

Luigi Galvini discovered something he named "animal electricity" when two different metals were connected in series with the frog's leg and to one another. Volta realized that the frog's leg served as both a conductor of electricity (what we would now call an electrolyte) and as a detector of electricity. He then realized that he could replace the leg with a brine soaked pad of paper.

Volta created the Voltaic Pile using two electrodes (Copper and Zinc.) To create the flow of electricity from the two electrodes the electrolyte is used. The process takes the Copper and Zinc but sepperates them using the electrolyte.
