Albert Einstein

Einstein got married in January 1903 with Mileva ,after several complications, and has 2 sons. Their marriage faltered as Mileva was losing her intellectual ambition and becoming an unhappy housewife. The couple finally divorced in 1919, the same year that Einstein married his cousin Elsa.

He was born on 14 March 1879 in the German city of Ulm.His mother thought Albert's head 'seemed to large.'

A Truly Beautiful Mind

Einstein was deeply shaken by the extent of the destruction of the atomic bomb. He wrote a letter to the United Nations in which he proposed the formation of a world government. This letter did not have any impact, but over the next year the next decade, Einstein got ever more involved in politics- agitating for an end to the arms buildup and using his popularity to campaign for peace and democracy.

Einstein was highly gifted in Maths and interested in Physics, and after finishing school he decided to study at a university in Zurich. He also felt a special interest in a fellow student, Mileva Maric. He found her to be a 'clever creature.' The couple fell in love. Letters survive in which they put their affection into words.

When nuclear fission was discovered, Einstein (upon the urging of his colleague) wrote a letter to Franklin D. Roosevelt on 2 August 1939 in which he warned, ' A single bomb of this type exploded in a port might very well destroy the whole port together with some of the surrounding territory.' This had a major impact on the government.
