Air Pollution-Awareness Project

Air Pollution

Air pollution is the introduction of particulates, biological materials, or other harmful materials into the Earth's atmosphere, possibly causing disease, death to humans, damage to other living organisms such as food crops, or the natural or built environment. Our goal for this project is to increase the awareness of this environmental issue and give more people imformation on how this can damage our environment and our health. Some actions to prevent this issue include: laws to regulate the amount of air pollution, community clean-up programs, reducing energy consumption, and using recyclable materials.

The sources of pollution are: transportation, fuel combustion, industrial processes, burning of fossil fuels, volcanoes, energy efficient houses and office buildings.

Humans can pick up litter, bike-ride instead of using gasoline from automobiles, start community clean-up programs, use more recyclable materials, and follow the laws set in place to reduce air pollution.

Background Info

The cause of this environmental issue is the burning of fossil fuels. Ozone, VOCS, Nitrogen dioxide, Carbon Monixide, Particulate Matter, Sulfer Dioxide, Lead, and Carbon Dioxide also cause Air Pollution. Many pollutants can harm human life. Ozone Depletion causes respitory issues, skin cancer, and Cataracts. VOCS can cause cancer. Nitrogen Dioxide causes respitory problems. Carbon Monixide is the silent killer (death due to suffocation) and reduces the ability to curriculate blood throughout the body. Particulate matter causes respitory problems. Sulfur dioxide causes respitory problems. Lead causes brain and nerve damage and digestive problems. These pollutants have harmful effects on the environment as well. For example, Ozone depletion causes damage to plants and trees and creates smog. VOCS can harm plants. NO2 causes acid rain and algae bloom. CO can kill organisms. Particulate Matter causes haze. SO2 causes acid rain, and reduces visibility. Lead can damage wild life and can cause cancer in animals. CO2 causes the Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming. In the future Air Pollution can lead to Global Warming and many deaths.....

Abstract/Summary : OUR VIDEO

We have done many things as a nation to hep this environmental issue. For example, we have passed laws like the Air Quality Act in 1967 where the federal government set goals called air quality standards for achieving cleaner air. The Clean Air Act of 1970 has strict standards for air quality and emissions. We also have made air purifiers. There has been a 98% reduction of lead emissions. We can litter less (reduce, reuse, recycle), buy/demand more battery powered cars, reduce our energy consumption, find better ways to produce goods in factories without releasing so many harmful pollutants into our environment. As individuals we can start community clean-up programs, buy recycleable materials and walk/ride our bikes more. These solutions will help reduce the amount of pollutants released into our environment.

Additional Info

We did an Awareness project. We made an imformational video approaching the topic of Air Pollution and its causes and effects. We hope this video can inform people more about this environmental issue. We also hope that this will persuade people to reduce their amount of energy consumption which will lead to a decrease in the amount of air pollution on our planet.
