Air Air is a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, and small amounts of other gases that surround the earth and form the earth's atmosphere. An average person breathes about 16kg of air everyday. This proves the quality of the air around us has a significant impact on our health. Air protects life on Earth by absorbing harmful ultraviolet solar radiation and reducing temperature extremes between day and night. The majority of the oxygen in the atmosphere comes from the algae in the oceans. Most plants and animals take in air, and give out carbon dioxide (CO2). This process is called respiration.
