African-Americans in the Civil War

African-Americans- fought on both sides- had freed and runaway slaves in the union-about 179,000 slaves severed in 163 units in the union,more in Navy aswell- workd in relif roles-such as carpenter, chaplains, cools, guards, laborers, nurses, spies, steamboat pilots, and surgeons

Confederate army- allowed blcks to enlist by 1865- not many enlised until Frederick Douglass encouraged to volenteer for it would result in full citizenship- between 3,000 and 10,000 black soldiers - between 20,000 and 50,000 worked inlabor positions - worked mostly for manual labor, such as road repairs and fortification building

Union Army-free african americans rushed to volunteer for the army- incoln feared that by lifting the law of 1792(preventing black men to barred arms) would cause boarder states to succed-by 1862 free black men were able to enlist-black union soldiers didnt get equal pay until 1864-blacks were still not treated fairly-black troops who were caotured had harsher treatement than white troops-played major role in the Battle of Crater and the Battle of Nashville
