The African American Museum

The African American Museum is an institution dedicated to the research, identification, selection, acquisition, presentation and preservation of visual art forms and historical documents that relate to the African American Community.

“History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme.” ― Mark Twain

The African American Museum was founded in 1974 as a part of the Special Collections at Bishop College, a Historically Black College that closed in 1988. The Museum has operated independently since 1979. A rich heritage of African American Art and history is housed in four vaulted galleries, augmented by a research library. Ths museum would not only meet the state standards of students exploring various cultures in their local community, but it will align with our unit about African American hertiage by showing thema variety of art work and documents about the local African American culture.
