Advice Column
Dear advice giver,I am a seventy year old woman. I feel that life has passed me by and that there is nothing left for me. My husband of 48 years died last year and my three children are all grown and live away. I have friends but many of them have spouses and I do not want to be a fifth wheel. I have never worked outside of my house since my family was my occupation. My health is declining and from long hours of watching television, my eyes are tired and I am rather stiff most days. I would like to take piano lessons but I feel that I am too old. There is not much that I feel that I can do and I am so lonely. Can you offer me any advice?Sincerely,Desperate
Dear Ms. Desperate, You withstood a test of time for 48 years just to give your husband and children a future. You had no complaints and no excuses, just hard work sometimes even letting your own dreams die. Praises are in order. You are an inspiration to all. Here are 5 helpful hints to make your life better .First; you need to remember that age is just a number. Your age should never hinder you from accomplishing your goals. Seventy is the new twenty. Second, you should take piano lesson. It has been proven that Music can be therapy. Music can have a powerful impact on anyone, but it releases a tripwire of powerful memories for the elderly. Third, you should stay active. It has been proven that daily ambulation decrease muscle atrophy. So I am challenging you to join Senior Center that serves the community over the age of 62. Many senior centers offer a variety of service, such as movies, games, book reviews, musical entertainers, dance and exercise classes for one affordable membership fee. Fourth, you can remedy your loneliness by the comforts of companionship. Companionship comes in many forms such as a visiting or live in caregiver, or perhaps maybe you might want the company of a pet. Fifth, maintain a social life. If your friends are your true friends, I am pretty sure they would not mind your company.
