Adolf Hitler's Early Years

1:47-2:44

"The next five and a half years saw young Hitler grow increasingly isolated and eccentric. He had some money... but lived the life of a derelict. He slept in a variety of furnished rooms or in municipal shelters, living on bread and milk or what he could pick up at soup kitchens. His health detiorated. It was a dog-eat-dog world, and simply surviving was a terrible struggle" (Wepman 21).

"One thing Klara Hitler could not do for her son was to protect him from his father. Alois Hitler ruled the household and all who lived within it. He was harsh, demanding, and ill-tempered. He punished every misdeed with a sound of thrashing. He not only beat the children regularly, but he would also whip the family dog until it cringed and wet the floor" (Altman 12).

"As a youth, Adolf Hitler aspired to an artistic career. He wanted to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna but failed the entrance exam twice" (Stalcup 32).
