Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Kids with ADHDAct without thinking, are hyperactive, and have trouble focusing. They may understand what's expected of them but have trouble following through because they can't sit still, pay attention, or focus on details.

Fact:ADHD is a common behavioral disorder that affects about 10% of school-age children. Boys are about three times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with it, though it's not yet understood why.

What can parents do?-Always be positive-Believe in your child- Establish structure and stick to it-Set clear expectations and rules-Encourage movement and sleep

Hereditary or Not?ADHD has biological origins that are not yet clearly understood. Research has shown that ADHD is common in kids who have close relatives with the disorder, and some genes have been identified that may make the development of ADHD more likely.

Symptoms in Children-Is easily distracted-Doesn't follow directions or finish tasks-Doesn't appear to be listening-Doesn't pay attention and makes careless mistakes-Forgets about daily activities-Has problems organizing daily tasks-Doesn’t like to do things that require sitting still-Often loses things-Tends to daydream

What is ADHD?Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder affects children and teens and can continue into adulthood. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder of children. Children with ADHD may be hyperactive and unable control their impulses. Or they may have trouble paying attention. These behaviors interfere with school and home life.
