ADHD is a mental disorder that affects children at an early age. Symptoms can range from the ability to maintain focus or hold attention for a length of time. Children show signs of hyper activity, such as being fidgety and unable sit still for long periods of time, which can affect their ability to learn. Research shows “it is a group of neurobehavioral disorders that have a neurobiological basis with strong genetic components it also impacts multiple areas of brain functions and life activities, such as school, work, family life, and interpersonal relations, as a result of the underlying pathology (Bedirhan).” This affects the child by preventing them from focusing on the teacher, following directions, and completing their school work. Math, reading, and spelling are difficult for children with ADHD because they have to concentrate on the subject which is challenging for ADHD students to do.

Medication Risks

Children with ADHD are easily distracted by outside noise like sounds of traffic, birds chirping and the weather. Inside the classroom children get sidetracked by papers being shuffled, ticking clocks, telephones or bells, and timers going off. Decorations in the classroom can cause distractions making it hard to focus on the task at hand. Teachers often see these distractions in the child as behavioral problems because the child is not following the classroom rules (Melago).
