Patients with Addison's disease should visit their healthcare providers regularly to monitor their hormone level.

A high sodium diet is recommended, especially in hot conditions or if a person is doing aerobic exercise. Salt substitutes should be avoided because they are high inpotassium. Limit potassium in diet.Doctor may recommend calcium and vitamin D supplements.Eat healthy, low sugar, complex carbohydrates, low fat diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Addison's disease is a disorder that occurs when your body produces insufficient amounts of certain hormones produced by your adrenal glands. In Addison's disease, your adrenal glands produce too little cortisol and often insufficient levels of aldosterone as well. Also called adrenal insufficiency, Addison's disease occurs in all age groups and affects both sexes. It can be life threatening. Addison's disease is a rare condition that affects 1 in 100,000 people. President John F. Kennedy had the condition.

The nurse should encourage a high protein, low carbohydrate and high sodium diet. Also suggest need for frequent small meals. Encourage rest periods after eating. Minimize stressful situations and promote quiet environment. Client should be taught signs and symptoms of glucocorticoids deficiency and excess.
