Early Life-Born on February 12, 1809 in Hodgenville, Kentucky-His parents were Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln-The family moved to Illinois in 1816--Nancy Hanks Lincoln died in 1818, and Thomas Lincoln married Sarah Bush-He learned by reading his neighbor's books and the Bible with help from Sarah.- Abraham Lincoln ran for the Illinois legislature and won 4 years in arow (1834, 1836, 1838, & 1840).-Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860 as the president of the United States.

Presidency-Abraham Lincoln became the president at the start of the Civil War. He controlled the Union. -After the Civil War he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, it freed all slaves in the rebellious, but kept the slaves in the border states. -In November, 1863, Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech in Gettysburg, called the Gettysburg Address. It addressed the Civil War's purpose, the Declaration of Indepencence, and the pursuit of human equality. -

Death and Legacy-On April 11, 1865, Abraham Lincoln gave his last speech. -An actor from Maryland named John Wilkes Booth was in the audience. He had tried to kidnap Abraham Lincoln 2 times, but failed. He decided that he would assassinate Abraham Lincoln (the president), Andrew Johnson (Vice-President), and William Seward (Secretary of State) all in one evening. -At Ford's Theater on April 14, Abraham Lincoln and Major Henry Rathbone were seeing a play. John Wilkes Booth went into the theater in the middle of the play and shot Abraham Lincoln and cut Major Henry Rathbone's arm. The bullet had his Abraham Lincoln's head.- Abraham Lincoln died on April 15, 1865, the day after he was shot. _Abraham Lincoln is remembered for his speeches, political campaigns, and his determination to keep the Union together.
