Abraham LincolnFebruary 12, 1809-April 15, 1865

In 1863, Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address speech which became the most quoted speech in American history. It dedicated the battlefield at Gettysburg to the Union Soldiers who had died there during the American Civil War. The Civil War lasted four years.

Lincoln was assassinated at the Ford's Theatre on April 14, 1865 at the age of 56 by John Wilkes Booth. Booth did not like the fact that Lincoln helped win freedom for blacks after defeating the South in the Civil War. Lincoln died the next day on April 15, 1865.

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States of America. He served our country from March 1861 until his death in April 1865.

On January 1, 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that declared freedom of slaves in the United States.

Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican President of the United States. Many southerners, who were mostly Democrats, feared Republican control. They didn't want to be part of the union, so they tried to start a new country. Lincoln had to gather an army together and try to fight to save the Union in a Civil War.

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

Lincoln had a very hard time keeping the country together during he Civil War. He faced many challenges as President to help bring the South back so we could be one United Nation again.

Lincoln died a hero.

Lincoln was the first president to be re-elected since Andrew Jackson in 1832. Lincoln won by more than 400,000 votes over Democratic candidate, George B. McClellan on November 8, 1864.

Lincoln's support for the Homestead Act of 1862 allowed poor people in the East to get land in the West so new settlements could be set up. The act also made it easier for people to come to the U.S. from foreign countries.

The National Banking Acts of 1863 and 1864 that Lincoln signed, established a national currency for the whole country.

Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment to the Constitution ending slavery in the U.S.

Honest Abe

Lincoln's speeches, writings and actions continued to reflect his point of view about race and equality until he was assassinated in 1865.

Lincoln set an example of leadership, strong character, and honesty. The Emancipation Proclamation also allowed black soldiers to fight for the Union.
