Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809 in Kentucky. He lived most of his early life living in a log cabin! His mother died when he was only nine years old and this deeply impacted him. His relationship with his father was never very sound and he always saw his father as lazy and everything he did not want to be. Lincoln dabled in politics for several years but with not much success decided to learn and practice law. He was well known and like for his way of bringing people around to seeing his point of view. He was very well spoken as well as well mannered. He decided to run for state senate in '55 but failed. He did get a lot of interest sparked in his politics which lead to his nomination as a presidential candidate for the republicans the very next year. in 1860 Abraham Lincoln became the sixteenth president of the United States of America. He proved himself more than able to lead the country through its darkest times and its deadliest war. He is still widely considered as being the greatest president we have ever had. As well as being a knowledgeable man of the law Lincoln also proved himself to be in the most literal sense a great commander-in-chief. His strategies and policies lead to an end of the war, a reuniting of the States, and the beginning of the end of slavery. Unfortunately John Wilks Booth thought and viewed Lincoln to be a man of evil. He felt he would be doing his country and his race a great service by destroying Lincoln and so at the Fox Theater on the 14th of April in 1865 just five days after the Confederates had surrendered.

- Elected as our 16th president while being a largely self educated man- Issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 which was meant to free black Americans from the tyranny of slavery. (Unfortanately slavery didn't come to a complete abolishment until the 13th amendment)- Gettysburg address still viewed as being one of the greatest presidential speeches of all time- His face is carved into Mount Rushmore as a monument to his many achievements.
