Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States

He served from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865

He was born on February 12, 1809 and was assassinated on April 15, 1865

Lincoln led the United States through the Civil War

He preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.

The Emancipation ProclamationSlaves in Confederate states which were not back in the Union by then would be free, but slaves in the Border States were not affected. The president knew the proclamation was a temporary military measure and only Congress could remove slavery permanently, but had the satisfaction of seeing the 13th Amendment pass a few months before his death.
