Famous People with Aspergers Syndrome

Hello my name is Dave; I am a returning adult student at Palm Beach State College. I have ADHD & Aspergers Syndrome (which is a milder form of Autism). I don't like loud or sudden sounds; I have a difficult time in social situations & it's hard for me to be around a lot of people at once. At a young age I became involved with heavy drug & alcohol abuse. Drugs took away many of the symptoms of A.S. & I was able to "come out of my of shell" and interact with people & the world. I became "the life of the party." (When I was a kid in the 1970's, schools & parents did not know about things like autism, A.D.H.D. & Aspergers.) I do not recommend illicit drug use as a therapy for A.S. My addiction ruined over 34 years of my life; many of the people I drank & drugged with are dead. I started drinking alcohol & smoking pot at age 12; I have done almost any drug you can think of. Near the end of my drug use I just wanted to die. Now I am in Alcoholics Anonymous & as of August 25th, 2009I have been sober for one year. I had tried A.A. 3 previous times in my life. The 3rd attempt was in 2000 when I put together about 1 1/2 years of sobriety. When I quickly went right back to that little kid: quiet, shy, hating being in public or around people and sequestering myself away in my bedroom, I knew something was up. I went to a psychiatrist & found out about my A.D.H.D. & Aspergers (somewhat disconcerting at age 36, but at least I knew why I was the way I am.) I have only a car I am making payments on; no house, no wife or children. I rent a room in someone's house that is also in recovery. Drug abuse takes many things away from people; things like a productive life, hope for the future, spirituality & self-esteem as well as that innate sense of self-worth healthy people have. What I do have are some of the best friends in my life [now] the respect & love of my family, a renewed sense of purpose and the knowledge that I have the ability & tools to change my life. The old adage, "better late than never comes to mind,” which helps sustain me when I feel down about my past. Now I am an education major who cannot decide whether to be an ESE or history teacher. I love history so much but also want to work with and help kids with Autism and Aspergers. I feel great and the future is looking good for the first time in my life. I do not hate being different for the first time in my life and at long, long last I am beginning to become happy.TO BE CON'T :-)
