Did you know? Abigail Adams was one of only two women in history whose husband and son both served as President of the United States.
Abigail Adams
During the Revolutionary War, her husband was away from home fighting the British. They began writing letters to each other. They exchanged more than 1100 letters during their lives together.
Historians studying John Adams' life have remarked that his wife Abigail advised him on many important decisions throughout his career. Their letters show that he frequently sought her ideas and counsel.
Abigail Adams didn't go to school (most girls didn't back them), but she loved to read. She especially enjoyed reading Shakespeare.
"Remember the ladies... All Men would be tyrants if they could."
While he was president, John Adams' critics knew how close he was to his wife. They started calling her "Mrs. President" to draw attention to her influence over his decisions and policies.
