A Nation Divided

Bleeding Kansas is when Kansas broke out into a civil war and killed 20 people. The cause of the civil war was when John Brown and his men dragged the pro-slavery men out of their homes and killed them with swards. John said that god had ordered him to to do this.

In 1830 Emerson had taken Dred Scott, a slave, to Illinois and then to the Wisconsin territory. When they both arrived at home, Emerson died. The Scott became a slave to Emerson's widow. In 1846 Scott sued her for his free rights. He stated that he became free when he lived in free territory.

John Brown tried to start an uprising by attacking the federal arsenal in Virginia to seize weapons. He wanted to capture slaves and kill them, and whoever stood in there way would also be killed. It began on October 16, 1859 when Brown took his men to Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in hopes of starting a slave rebellion. He sent his men into the countryside to get slaves to join him, but the African Americans refused because they feared punishment if they took part.

People in the South began to become enraged becasue Lincoln not end slavery. Instead he said that slavery could not expand, so it would eventually die out. The South believed that without slave labor, their economy and way of life would be destroyed. So they began to consider seccesion, or formally withdrawing from the union. They believed that because you can join a union voluntarily, that you could leave a union in the same way.

In 1860 people began to vote for a new president. The Northerners and Southerners did not agree on the same cadidate. The Notherners chose Senator Stephen Douglas because he believed in slavery. The Southerners chose John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky because he opposed slavery in the territories.

The Compromise of 1850 consists of 5 laws that allowed California to enter as a free state union. The rest of the Mexican Cession was divided into Utah and New Mexico. The decision on slavery would now be decided by the union.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act was introduced in January 1854 by Stephen Douglas. The act would eliminate the Missouri Compromise restrictions on slavery. This plan would divide the remainder of the Louisiana Purchase into tew new territories. The new territories are Kansas and Nebraska that allowed people to make decisions about slavery.
